Quick answer

Stay in Baixa/Chiado if it's your first visit — it's flat, central, and walkable to everything. Choose Bairro Alto for nightlife, Belém for families, and Avenida da Liberdade for a five-star stay.

Baixa / Chiado — best for first-time visitors

Baixa is the flat, grid-planned downtown rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, bordered by Chiado's elegant shopping streets. You're within walking distance of the main squares, the riverfront, and the funiculars that climb to Bairro Alto — which makes it the easiest base if you don't want to think too hard about logistics.

Expect more tourist traffic and slightly higher prices here than in residential districts, but you'll save on taxis and have options at every budget level, from simple guesthouses to design hotels.

Bairro Alto — best for nightlife

By day, Bairro Alto is quiet and residential. After 9pm, its narrow streets fill with bars, fado houses, and crowds that spill outside. It's a fantastic base if going out is part of your trip — just request a courtyard-facing or upper-floor room, since noise carries late into the night, especially Thursday through Saturday.

Belém — best for families

A tram ride from the centre, Belém trades nightlife for wide riverside parks, the Jerónimos Monastery, and the original Pastéis de Belém bakery. Pavements are wider and quieter, which makes a real difference with a stroller or young children.

Avenida da Liberdade — best for luxury

Lisbon's grandest boulevard is lined with five-star hotels, flagship boutiques, and leafy medians — a five-minute walk from the historic centre without sacrificing comfort.

Frequently asked questions

What's the single best area for a first Lisbon trip?+

Baixa/Chiado — it's central, flat, and connects easily to every other neighbourhood by foot, tram, or funicular.

Is Alfama worth staying in?+

Yes for atmosphere and views, but it's hilly and uneven underfoot, so pack light and comfortable shoes if you choose it.
