A fast, affordable gateway to Southeast Asia.

Best areas to stay in Bangkok

Sukhumvit

$$

Best for first-time visitors

Directly along the BTS Skytrain with the widest choice of hotels, malls, and restaurants. The easiest base for getting anywhere in the city quickly.

Riverside (Charoenkrung)

$$$

Best for luxury & river views

Home to many five-star riverside hotels with private shuttle boats to the BTS — a quieter, more scenic alternative to Sukhumvit.

Old City (Rattanakosin)

$

Best for culture & temples

Walking distance to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, but further from the Skytrain network — better for a culture-focused stay than nightlife.

Silom

$$

Best for business travelers & nightlife

Bangkok's financial district by day, lively nightlife strip by night, well served by both BTS and MRT lines.

Arriving

Bangkok airport to city centre

Airport Rail Link

~30 min to Phaya Thai · $

Connects Suvarnabhumi Airport to the BTS Skytrain network — cheapest option if your hotel is near a BTS station.

Taxi (metered)

~45–60 min (traffic dependent) · $

Insist on the meter rather than a flat 'negotiated' fare, and budget extra time for Bangkok's traffic, especially on weekday evenings.

Private transfer

~45–60 min · $$

Pre-booked and fixed-price, useful for late arrivals or when traveling with family and luggage.

Getting around

Car rental in and around the city

Self-driving in Bangkok is not recommended — traffic, signage, and parking make it one of the least car-friendly major cities in Asia. A rental car is far more useful for exploring outside the capital, such as Kanchanaburi or the beach towns, where trains don't reach directly.

Staying connected

Thailand has strong urban 4G/5G coverage. An eSIM makes ride-hailing (Grab) and translation apps usable immediately after landing, without the airport SIM kiosk queue.

Practical travel tips

Practical tips

  • Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples, including the Grand Palace — sarongs are sometimes available to rent at the entrance.
  • The BTS and MRT don't yet connect to every neighbourhood — check your hotel's distance to the nearest station before booking.
  • Tap water isn't recommended for drinking; bottled or filtered water is cheap and widely available.
  • Download Grab before you arrive for taxis, food delivery, and fare transparency.

Bangkok FAQs

How many days do you need in Bangkok?+

Three days covers the main temples, a market, and a river cruise — many travelers combine it with island or northern Thailand add-ons.

Is Bangkok safe for first-time visitors?+

Yes, with normal city precautions. The main risks are traffic and common tourist scams near major landmarks rather than violent crime.
