Marrakech Travel Guide
A sensory medina with riads that redefine what 'boutique hotel' means.
Updated September 18, 2025 · By Imane El Fassi

Best areas to stay in Marrakech
Medina (Old City)
$$Best for first-time visitors & atmosphere
Staying in a traditional riad inside the walled old city puts you steps from Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks — book one with a private transfer, as taxis can't navigate the narrow alleys.
Hivernage
$$$Best for modern comfort
A quieter district just outside the medina walls with modern hotels, pools, and easier car access.
Gueliz (Ville Nouvelle)
$$Best for independent travelers
The modern new town with contemporary restaurants, galleries, and easier walkable streets — a 15–20 minute walk from the medina.
Palmeraie
$$$Best for luxury & resort stays
A palm-grove district on the city's edge with large resort-style riads and golf courses — requires a car or transfer for everything.

Arriving
Marrakech airport to city centre
Riad-arranged transfer
~20 min to the medina · $$
Most riads offer or recommend a pickup, since cars cannot drive into the narrow medina streets — porters meet you at the nearest access point.
Official airport taxi
~15–25 min · $
Agree the fare before getting in, or confirm the metered rate — Marrakech taxis are inexpensive but negotiation is customary.
Private transfer
~15–25 min · $$
The simplest option for first-time visitors unfamiliar with local negotiation norms.
Getting around
Car rental in and around the city
A car isn't useful inside the medina, but becomes valuable for day trips to the Atlas Mountains, Essaouira, or the Agafay Desert. Many travelers rent for just the day-trip portion of their stay, picking up from a Gueliz or Hivernage location rather than navigating the old city.

Staying connected
eSIM recommendations
Coverage is reliable in Marrakech and most tourist routes. An eSIM is especially useful for maps inside the maze-like medina, where it's easy to lose your bearings.

Practical travel tips
Practical tips
- Bargaining is expected in the souks — starting around a third of the initial asking price is a common approach.
- Dress modestly, particularly away from hotel pools, out of respect for local customs.
- Riads can be genuinely hard to find by car — save your host's WhatsApp number and exact walking directions in advance.
- Friday afternoons are prayer time and some shops close or operate reduced hours.
Marrakech FAQs
Is Marrakech safe for tourists?+
Yes, with normal precautions — the medina can be disorienting and persistent vendors are common, but violent crime against tourists is rare.
Should I stay inside or outside the medina?+
Inside for atmosphere and walkability to souks; outside (Hivernage/Gueliz) for easier car access, modern comfort, and a quieter stay.
